![]() What would your life be like if you lived in alignment with your values and beliefs, even in the face of adversity and opposition? Imagine a life where you stay true to your core values, no matter the challenges that come your way. A life where your actions align with your deepest convictions, and you navigate through difficult situations with unwavering integrity and resilience. In this blog post, we'll explore the power of living in alignment with your values and beliefs, and how it can lead to a life of authenticity, fulfillment, and inner strength. Before diving in, it's worth a minute to consider the difference between values and beliefs. According to Jarrod Davis, former Software Developer at the Barrett Values Centre,"Values unite, beliefs divide. There is a significant difference between values and beliefs. Beliefs are assumptions we hold to be true. When we use our beliefs to make decisions, we are assuming the causal relationships of the past, which led to the belief, will also apply in the future. In a rapidly changing world where complexity is increasing day by day, using information from the past to make decisions about the future may not be the best way to support us in meeting our needs. Beliefs are contextual: They arise from learned experiences, resulting from the cultural and environmental situations we have faced. Values are not based on information from the past and they are not contextual. Values are universal. Values transcend contexts because they are based on what is important to us: They arise from the experience of being human. Values are intimately related to our needs: Whatever we need—whatever is important to us or what is missing from our lives—is what we value. As our life conditions change, and as we mature and grow in our psychological development, our value priorities change. When we use our values to make decisions we focus on what is important to us—what we need to feel a sense of well-being." Our beliefs often originate within us from the beliefs of others that we have adopted and live by without question or consideration. Beliefs may even be fueled by the fear of what might happen to us if we don't subscribe to certain behaviors dictated by those beliefs. In the authors opinion, it's always worth diving into our beliefs to make sure the beliefs we choose to live by are really our own and not just adopted from a place of fear. A line in the lyrics of a popular U2 song has always struck me and I've witnessed this to be true in life sometimes, "The worst things in the world are justified by belief." The Importance of Values and Beliefs Values and beliefs form the foundation of who we are as individuals. They are the guiding principles that shape our decisions, actions, and interactions with the world. When we live in alignment with our values and beliefs, we live with a sense of purpose and authenticity. Our choices become a reflection of our true selves, and we experience a deeper sense of fulfillment and inner peace.
